What are CarlSites?

CarlSites seeks to empower students, faculty, and staff to think deeper about digital identity and web literacy while reclaiming one’s digital presence from third party services. It is a DoOO (Domain of One’s Own) instance associated with Carleton College’s main site, carleton.edu. Creating a CarlSite means creating a digital space used to showcase yourself and your work at Carleton.

Common uses for CarlSites include ePortfolios, research or community project websites, websites for a class project and much more. Get started by learning what we offer and completing this CarlSites interest form!

Website Platforms at a Glance

WordPress

WordPress is a user-friendly interface. It is one of most popular website platforms chosen and can be used for small projects as individual ePorfolios or bigger projects to be used internationally.

Omeka

Omeka is an open-source web publishing platform that showcases physical items through a digital exhibition. There are two applications. Omeka S is used to host many projects, all with the same repository. Omeka Classic hosts a single project that can be edited by multiple users.

Scalar

Scalar is designed to facilitate digital writing and allows users to create book-length words in an interactive and engaging format.

Common FAQ

As a student, for how long do I get to keep my site?

Your site will be hosted for up to two years after your departure from Carleton College, after which the content will be deleted.

As a faculty & staff member, for how long do I get to keep my site?

Your site will be hosted until your last day of employment, after which the content will be deleted.

How many domains may I request for?

This is dependent on your need. Your website request form will help determine what you may be eligible for.

Is there a limit to the storage space for my site?

No specific limit exists for the storage space allocated to your site. That being said, irresponsible file management is against our general use policy, so it is advisable not to exceed reasonable usage. Please review our acceptable use policies for more information.

What happens if I forget my domain password or login details?

If you forget your contact details please either report an issue ticket, or contact at@carleton.edu.

Can I collaborate with others on my site?

Yes, you can add them into the user section of your site. Additionally, you can add collaborators outside of Carleton into your site, but be aware that they must abide by the same acceptable use policies.

Can I use my site for e-commerce, or selling products/services?

No. Please review our acceptable use policies.
